What is #Linspire? A place where technical - and not-so-technical - discussions about the LindowsOS and Linspire Operating Systems can take place
We are just starting as an alternative chatting channel where all are welcome to drop in, have a cup of coffee, share a few thoughts, have
fellowship with one another, and expect a consistent application of aims and policies.
Emphasis will be placed on mutual friendship and respect, and a desire to help one other with day-to-day and ongoing problems.
That means we don't point out each others' shortcomings, as nearly everybody has expertise in different areas.
Those in the nickname list with an @ against their names are "ops" - that is they have channel operator status and have the responsibility of overseeing what goes on, like a Moderator in some places.
While waiting for the channel to get established, frequently they won't actually be around. People in IRC frequently talk in several different channels simultaneously - or hang around waiting for friends - or just idle, now that "always-on" ADSL and Cable internet connections are becoming much more usual.
As we are very new, there likely are people here who are just keeping the channel open and "the lights on". An unregistered channel disappears when the last person leaves. To register the channel we need ten people who regularly log in and participate.
Having the @ does not mean they know all the answers to all questions! It just means they have experience in channel supervision - an art-form of its own.
If you need someone to talk to, we hope you will find someone helpful here when you drop by. If there isn't anybody awake or helpful, please try again at a different time of day, perhaps. IRC is an international medium, and people from many different timezones round the world use it.
We hope to add some hints and tips about chatting on IRC - Internet Relay Chat - which is different from using a "Java Chat Room" on the worldwide web.
We can recommend the use of either of two chat clients... programs to use for chatting... and while some people may be using a Linux operating system, many others will be using Microsoft Windows.
You could try either...
the X-Chat client you can download from Click and Run (CNR), or use an exisiting
mIRC which is a MS Windows client, which works fantastically through WINE in many forms of Linux
X-Chat is also available in a Microsoft Windows version
You can also access undernet using Java Chat which doesn't allow you to access all the bells and whistles of IRC but at least lets you in. Click on to http://www.undernet.org/webchat.php.
We shall add some explanatory captures in due course showing the interface they use.
We also encourage visitors to use the linspire.com message board - where cries for help, general greetings, and all sorts of stuff can be left. There's a lot of insteresting stuff on it.
